We all have those times when we open up a cabinet or closet door… and decide you just can’t take it anymore! But before you dive in, let me share a few tips that always guide me through an organizing project:
- Empty everything out. We always try to short cut it and do a little face lift to a messy cabinet, drawer or closet. Don’t do it! It’s a little more work, but when you clear out everything, you start with a clean slate and can really design the space to work for you.
- Don’t forget to toss. If you don’t get rid of anything, you are likely just rearranging clutter. Just ask yourself some clear, honest questions: Do I like this? Do I use it? When was the last time I used it? Recruit the help of a friend if you need someone to help you be objective.
- Put like things together. It makes sense, but too often we compromise and end up stashing things on shelves or in drawers where there is some open space. Resist the temptation! Designate an entire shelf or drawer so you can keep a collection of things together.
- Contain it. Maybe you don’t have a big budget for containers, but remember that they are essential to creating boundaries for items that like to wander. Containers also create a crisp, organized look that will make everything feel organized. While I love fancy, high quality containers, I have plenty of inexpensive ones that do a great job. See some of my favorite containers HERE.
And most of all, don’t get overwhelmed. Organizing is easy and fun! And remember, if you get stuck or if your organizing projects seem to come undone too quickly, check out my Get Organized training series.
